Extended License Handbook for Contributors

Extended Licenses

iStock now has hundreds of thousands of clients around the world, and many of them want more options for the usages available on their images and videos. They’re willing to pay higher prices for that kind of freedom, earning contributors up to many times what they would on a normal download.

Buyers can choose Extended License options from any file opted-in to the program. As they select from the menu, the standard form of Content License Agreement is effectively amended by one or more Extended License Provisions. They review the provisions, type “I Agree” and begin their download.

Opting In

Opt-In your entire portfolio from your profile page. If there are files which you’d rather not make available, you can opt them out individually from the Edit Image page. Clients may only purchase Extended License options for opted-in files.

What’s New

  • We’ve lowered the prices to attract more sales, and simplify the offering. The new structure feels more like iStock, while still offering attractive compensation to contributors. We’ve moved to a flat rate system wherever possible to make everything easier. We think this new approach is going to mean more downloads for you.
  • We’ve removed the confusion over which files are available, and which ones aren’t. Images must be opted-in to be available with Extended License options. We feel that the clarity provided by this approach will make the system easier for everyone to use, and clients won’t have any more unanswered requests.
  • We’ve entirely removed the option for extending a license to cover socially sensitive usages. You can make your portfolio available without having to worry about future usage you may be uncomfortable with.
  • If you’re not sold on opting-in your entire portfolio yet, how about this? Exclusive artists will receive an additional 10% royalty on every file purchased with an Extended License option.

Extended License Provisions

Here is a quick breakdown of the Extended License options available from iStockphoto. Please carefully read the complete terms of each provision on the File Download page. In each case where the Standard License Agreement is amended by the terms of an Extended License, all other terms and conditions of the Agreement remain in full force and effect, including all Prohibited Uses.

Reproduction / Print Run Limits

The Standard License Agreement limits the number of times clients may print the Content to 500,000 reproductions. By purchasing this extension, clients can make an unlimited number of reproductions (100 credits). For example, the client may print an unlimited number of posters or make an unlimited number of DVDs containing the Content.

Multi-Seat Licenses

This option allows clients to extend usage of the Content to more than one person within their organization.

Items for Resale - Limited Run

Clients may purchase Extended Licenses allowing them to use image or illustration Content in items for resale, including:

a) Up to 100,000 cards, stationery items, stickers, or paper products.
b) Up to 10,000 posters, calendars, mugs, or mousepads.
c) Up to 2,000 t-shirts, apparel items, games, toys, entertainment goods, or framed artwork.

Electronic Items for Resale - Unlimited Run

Clients may also purchase the option to resell the Content in an unlimited number of electronic templates for e-greeting or similar cards, electronic templates for web or applications development (for example, web-based advertisement templates or video games), PowerPoint or Keynote templates, screensavers, and email or brochure templates.

Please see the complete provisions on the File Download page for the full details of rights and restrictions regarding each of these Extended License options. (You will not be required to make any purchase when you view this page.)
